Is Olymp Trade halal or haram?

Many Muslim traders ask whether Olymp Trade is halal before they open an account. Here is what published fatwas say about binary options, with links so you can read the rulings yourself.

Short answer

According to the fatwas we reviewed, fixed-time binary options of the kind Olymp Trade offers are haram (not permissible). Scholars treat them as gambling (maysir, qimar) with excessive uncertainty (gharar), and we found no recognised fatwa body that permits them.

This is a summary of published rulings, not a fatwa. Ask a qualified scholar you trust about your own situation.

Why scholars consider binary options haram

Gambling (maysir, qimar)

Each trade has only two outcomes: you win a fixed payout or lose your whole stake, and one side's gain is the other side's loss. Nothing is bought or owned; you are betting on a price movement.

Excessive uncertainty (gharar)

The result depends entirely on where the price is at a set moment, often seconds or minutes away. The Prophet (peace be upon him) prohibited transactions based on this kind of uncertainty (Sahih Muslim).

No real asset

The International Islamic Fiqh Academy (Resolution 63 (1/7)) ruled that options contracts may not be traded, because what is sold is neither an asset, nor a usufruct, nor a financial right that can be exchanged for money.

Forex and CFDs at Olymp Trade

Olymp Trade also offers forex or CFD trading. Leveraged CFDs raise further issues: overnight swap charges (riba) and selling what you do not own. A swap-free label removes only the interest, not the other problems.

What about Islamic or swap-free accounts?

Some brokers market Islamic or swap-free accounts. Removing overnight interest deals with riba, but a fixed-time binary option has no overnight interest to begin with: the problem is the gambling structure itself. Darul Ifta Birmingham states that 'halal' binary options accounts are still impermissible.

Be sceptical of websites that call any binary options broker halal. Many of them, including affiliate sites like ours, earn commission when you sign up, which is why we quote the rulings instead of giving our own opinion.

Halal alternatives to consider

  • Buying Shariah-screened shares or ETFs outright and holding them, so you own the asset.
  • Sukuk and Islamic investment funds overseen by a Shariah board.
  • Currency exchange settled on the spot, for a real need rather than speculation.

Check any product with a scholar or the provider's Shariah board before you invest.

Frequently asked questions

Is Olymp Trade halal?

No, according to the fatwas we reviewed: binary options are treated as gambling (maysir) with excessive uncertainty (gharar). Ask a qualified scholar about your own case.

Does Olymp Trade have an Islamic account?

Check the broker's current account types. Even if it offers one, scholars such as Darul Ifta Birmingham say a swap-free label does not make binary options permissible.

Are binary options haram in every madhab?

The rulings we reviewed, from Hanafi muftis, Islamweb's fatwa centre and the International Islamic Fiqh Academy, reach the same conclusion. We are not aware of a recognised fatwa body that permits fixed-time binary options.

What should I do with profits from binary options?

Scholars commonly advise keeping your original capital and giving away the profit from impermissible transactions to charity, without expecting reward. Ask a scholar how this applies to you.
